Check Your GFCI Outlets
Has it rained recently? Is your sprinkler system set to water in the evening while your lights are on? Modern
homes use GFCI outlets for outdoor and garage and kitchen plugs. GFCI outlets are outlets that detect when the
electrical current has connected to the ground. This typically happens in the presence of moisture. When moisture
is detected the GFCI trips and the plug is deactivated. This happens to protect you from being
shocked.
Look at the outlet the lights are plugged into. If it has a red and black button between the plugs
it is a GFCI outlet. If there are not buttons between the plugs, keep looking at other outlets. One
GFCI outlet can control several .regular. outlets. If you cannot find a GFCI outlet on the outside of
the house, try looking in the garage, kitchen, and even bathroom.
Once the rain has stopped and your decorations have dried out, go to the GFCI outlet and press
the reset button. If the button doesn.t engage or the GFCI outlet trips again soon after then it.s
probably still too wet outside. Be patient and give it more time. If you have a sprinkler system
that waters in the evening, make sure to change the programming so that it waters in the morning when the
lights are off.
Check Timers & Extension Cords
It's rare, but sometimes extension cords will get unplugged. Follow the cord from when it leaves the outlet to where
the decorations are and make sure all the connections are secure. Also inspect the timers and verify that the display
shows the current time. If it doesn't show the time or if the overload light is on then it.s a problem that we need to
take care of ourselves. If you wish to attempt changing the programming, please go to our website for a guide.
